What is Nitrox?
Nitrox refers to gas mixtures with oxygen concentrations higher than the standard 21% found in regular air. These enriched air mixtures reduce nitrogen absorption, extending bottom times and reducing the risk of decompression sickness for dives within recreational limits.
Maximum Operating Depth (MOD)
MOD is critical for safety. It represents the deepest depth you can safely dive with a specific nitrox mix while keeping the oxygen partial pressure (PPO2) at or below a safe limit, typically 1.4 atmospheres for recreational diving. Exceeding this limit risks oxygen toxicity, which can be life-threatening underwater.
Common Nitrox Mixes
- EANx32 (32% O2): Versatile for recreational diving, suitable to approximately 33 meters / 110 feet MOD at 1.4 PPO2
- EANx36 (36% O2): Better for shallower dives, limited to roughly 29 meters / 95 feet MOD at 1.4 PPO2
