What to Expect on a Jupiter Drift Dive

How Drift Diving Works

Nearly all boat diving in Jupiter and Riviera Beach is drift diving. The Gulf Stream current runs north along the coast, typically at 1 to 3 knots. The captain drops you upstream of the dive site, you descend and ride the current over the reef, and the boat follows your bubbles. When you surface at the end of the dive, the boat picks you up. There is no anchor line and no fighting current. You just relax and fly.

A Typical Dive Day

Most operators run two-tank morning trips, with some offering afternoon single-tank trips as well. A typical morning schedule looks something like this:

7:00 AMArrive at the dock, check in, set up gear
7:30 AMBoat departs, captain briefs the first dive
8:00 AMFirst dive (typically 45 to 60 minutes)
9:15 AMSurface interval on the boat
9:45 AMSecond dive
11:00 AMBack at the dock

Depths and Conditions

Most reef dives in Jupiter range from 60 to 90 feet. Deeper wrecks and ledges can reach 100+ feet. Water temperature typically ranges from 72°F in winter to 84°F in summer. Visibility averages 40 to 80 feet, though it can exceed 100 feet when the Gulf Stream is pushing clean blue water close to shore. A 3mm wetsuit is comfortable most of the year. In winter (December through March), a 5mm or a hooded vest is a good idea.

Booking Tips for First-Time Divers

Reserve Early

Weekend trips and shark dives fill up fast, especially during winter shark season (November through March). Book at least a week in advance for weekends. Weekday trips are usually easier to get on with shorter notice.

What to Bring

  • Certification card. Every operator will ask. No card, no dive. A digital card on the PADI or SSI app works.
  • Your own gear or rental arrangements. Most operators offer rental gear, but confirm in advance. If you own your own gear, bring it. You will be more comfortable.
  • Surface marker buoy (SMB). Required by most Jupiter boats. The captain follows your bubbles, but an SMB at the end of the dive makes pickup faster and safer.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen and water. You will be on a boat in the Florida sun. Stay hydrated and protect your skin without harming the reef.

Cancellation and Weather

Trips can be canceled due to weather, especially during summer storm season. Most operators have clear cancellation policies on their websites. If seas are over 4 to 5 feet, the trip will likely be scrubbed. Check with your operator the evening before if conditions look marginal.

Seasickness

The ride out to the dive sites is usually 15 to 30 minutes. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication the night before and again in the morning. Avoid heavy meals before the boat. Stand near the center of the boat and keep your eyes on the horizon. Once you are in the water, seasickness disappears.

Tipping

It is customary to tip the crew on dive boats. A general guideline is $10 to $20 per diver for a two-tank trip. The crew works hard to get you to the best sites and pick you up safely. Show your appreciation.
