Mapping Project

A guide for your PADI Divemaster Mapping Project

The Mapping Project is not just about creating a map, but also understanding the dive site comprehensively, which aids in planning and conducting safe and enjoyable dives.

  1. 01

    Select a Dive Site

Choose a suitable, diverse, and familiar location. The site should have enough features to create a meaningful map while being accessible for multiple survey dives.

  2. 02

    Preliminary Survey

Conduct an initial dive to get an overview of the site. Note major landmarks, general layout, depths, and any obvious features or hazards.

  3. 03

    Detailed Exploration

Perform multiple dives to document topography, hazards, measurements, depths, and currents. Use a slate to take notes underwater and compass bearings between features.

  4. 04

    Draft Map Creation

Using your collected data, create a rough map that includes landmarks, depths, entry and exit points, and a compass rose. Include a scale and legend.

  5. 05

    Map Refinement

Incorporate feedback from your instructor and add any missing details. Ensure accuracy and clarity for someone who has never visited the site.

  6. 06

    Presentation

Present your map to your instructor, explaining features, site considerations, entry/exit procedures, and emergency protocols for the dive site.

  7. 07

    Incorporate Feedback

Finalize the map based on your instructor's feedback. The completed map should be professional, accurate, and useful as a briefing tool.
